Houston was the capital of Texas from 1837 to 1839
Texas has had about as many constitutions as it has had flags. Before we were a republic, there was the Constitution of 1824---the Mexican Federal Constitution that was patterned after the Spanish Constitution of 1812. In 1827, the Constitution of Coahuila and Texas was drawn up. There was a proposed Constitution of 1833; the Constitution of the Republic in 1836; the Constitution of 1845, which provided for the government of Texas as a state, not a republic. In 1861 came the Secession Constitution; then in 66 the Reconstruction Constitution. If you are still counting, there were two more. The 1869 Constitution, and the one we have today---the Constitution of 1876. It has been altered here and there, but still remains the fundamental law of the state. The last constitution of Texas was adopted February 15, 1876.
Ron Stones The Book of Texas DaysI cannot regard the annexation of Texas to the American Union in any other light than as the grave of all her hopes of happiness and greatness.
